Word Parts Visual {Prefixes, Base Words, & Suffixes}
In order for learners to understand how to break apart longer words into smaller chunks for easier reading and spelling, we want to help them recognize that many words have word parts called prefixes, base words, and suffixes. {I’m sharing several resources at the end of this post that you can use to help you implement this with your learners.}
But one of the things that learners with language-based learning differences struggle with is that they often can’t remember the meaning of “prefix,” “base word,” or “suffix” when you’re discussing the word parts.
So we can use these terms until we’re blue in the face, but the meaning of those terms doesn’t always connect with our learners. This was the case with my daughter {5th grade}.
Enter our very simple train visual for word parts. It can serve as a great reminder to the vocabulary terms when referencing the parts of words.
