Phonics Word Search Puzzles

If you’re looking for a fun and engaging idea that could be used before reading or as an independent activity*, check out all our phonics word search puzzles! More than 50 puzzles are included PLUS the answer keys.

You’ll find phonics puzzles for:

  • Short Vowel Words
  • CVCe/Silent e Words
  • Bossy r Words
  • Vowel Team Words {including long vowel teams and diphthongs}

*These pages DO NOT take the place of teaching the phonics pattern. Before setting your learners free to try them on their own, be sure you have explicitly taught them the phonics pattern.

Phonics Word Search Puzzle - trace and sound out the words first

Each page asks learners to trace the words at the top. As they trace each phonics word, encourage your learners to sound through the words. This makes reading and blending the words multi-sensory as they say, hear, and trace.

Phonics Word Search Puzzle - find the word in the word search

Once the words have been traced, learners look for the words in the puzzles at the bottom of the page.

On the first two phonics patterns {short vowels and CVCe words} words will only be found forward and going down. On the second two phonics patterns {bossy r and vowel team words}, words can be found forward, down, AND diagonally.

Words will not be found backward on ANY of the puzzles because doing this could confuse some learners who already struggle with moving left to right as they read and blend words.
